In addition to regulatory compliance requirements, these are becoming critical growth enablers for millions of companies with customers in the European Union (EU) and\/or European Economic Area (EEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tilman Harmeling, Senior Privacy Expert at Usercentrics, shared his expertise on the recent regulatory developments around data privacy in Europe, particularly with the <a href=\"https:\/\/usercentrics.com\/digital-markets-act-dma\/\">Digital Markets Act (DMA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/usercentrics.com\/knowledge-hub\/role-of-gatekeepers-under-digital-markets-act\/\">designated six \u201cgatekeepers\u201d<\/a> inlast September 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alphabet (Google, Android, YouTube)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amazon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apple (iOS, App Store)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ByteDance (TikTok)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft (LinkedIn, Windows PC OS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2024 they designated Booking.com as a seventh gatekeeper and core platform service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, speculation has been high about the potential impact for businesses using these platforms, especially when it comes to potentially losing ad revenue streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of additional concern, as Harmeling noted, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/usercentrics.com\/whitepapers\/\">Many companies doing business in the EU are still not privacy-compliant,<\/a> despite the GDPR having been in force for several years\u201d.
