A contemporary definition of privacy
A clear, contemporary definition of privacy must first acknowledge that privacy today is not merely about secrecy or hiding information. It’s also about control. Specifically, the right of individuals and communities to determine how, when, and why their personal information is collected, used, and shared.
This shifts the focus from privacy as a passive state — being left alone — to privacy as an active relationship between people, data, and institutions. In other words, privacy is less about isolation and more about negotiated boundaries within increasingly interconnected systems.
Privacy is a universal human concern, recognized as a fundamental right across legal systems and cultures, but its expression is deeply contextual. Expectations about what is private vary by culture, generation, platform, and even mood. A useful definition must then be flexible enough to account for cultural and situational variability without losing clarity. That means it should provide a stable conceptual frame — privacy as autonomy, agency, and dignity — while allowing for the messy realities of how it is interpreted in practice.
If privacy is reduced to compliance jargon, it loses its human meaning. If it’s too abstract, it becomes useless in applied settings. We can bridge this gap by clarifying whose privacy is at stake, what constitutes harm, and what safeguards are required — not just in theory, but in real-world contexts like behavioral advertising, AI training, or biometric recognition.
Further, a contemporary definition of privacy must reflect the asymmetries of power that define the modern data economy. It should highlight not just the individual’s right to choose, but the systemic conditions under which that choice is meaningful. That includes recognizing the opacity of algorithms, the use of dark patterns or manipulative design of consent interfaces, and the dominance of platform gatekeepers.
Finally, a serious definition of privacy cannot pretend that individuals are always in a position to make fully informed, empowered decisions. It must speak to the need for collective protections, structural transparency, and governance mechanisms that go beyond personal responsibility. It should serve as both a philosophical foundation and a strategic guidepost — for business owners, marketers, policymakers, technologists, and users alike.

From the elegant separation of inner family spaces from public courtyards in traditional Islamic architecture to the many veiling practices across cultures, human beings have consistently created rituals and structures that establish zones of privacy. In oral traditions, taboos and sacred knowledge are often guarded within kinship lines or priesthoods, further underscoring privacy as a means of preserving meaning, power, and identity. These practices reflect more than custom: they illuminate the universal impulse to define what is ours and to control how it is either revealed or concealed.
A multicultural understanding of privacy must go beyond the Western legalistic model of privacy — often centered on individual consent and personal data ownership — to fully capture how privacy functions across the world. In cultures that prioritize relational identity and group harmony, privacy may also be important for managing perceptions, avoiding confrontation, and maintaining the subtle equilibrium of social order.
Recognizing these differences is crucial if we are to build technologies, policies, and communication practices that respect diverse privacy expectations in a truly global and interconnected digital economy.
Privacy is timeless
Across millennia, societies have negotiated the boundaries between the private and the public, the hidden and the shared, the individual and the collective. What we are witnessing today is not new, but the latest chapter in an ancient conversation. From Roman laws protecting domestic spaces to Enlightenment arguments about individual liberty, privacy has always been in flux, shaped by the technologies, institutions, and moral philosophies of the time.
What distinguishes this moment is not the presence of the debate, but its scale, speed, and complexity. Never before have the infrastructures of daily life been so thoroughly intertwined with systems of surveillance, data extraction, and algorithmic inference. Ancient problems of gossip, misinformation, or coercion now play out across billions of interconnected devices and platforms. The challenge is no longer merely protecting physical space or personal secrets, but navigating a global network in which the boundaries between public and private are increasingly blurred.
That this debate is timeless reminds us that privacy is not simply a technical problem to be solved — it is a human question that must be continually reinterpreted and reimagined. We are not the first to ask what privacy means, but we may be the first to ask it in a world where the answer affects everyone, everywhere.
Privacy is human
When we teach our children values — like autonomy, freedom, dignity, and respect — we are, often unknowingly, teaching the foundational elements of privacy. Privacy is a human need
Privacy’s importance, however, goes beyond moral principles and international law. We also know that privacy has an important biological component: when human beings are deprived of privacy our whole body suffers, mentally and physically.
The absence of privacy is responsible for increased stress, social withdrawal, and impaired emotional regulation, among several other symptoms and conditions caused by the inability to enjoy the benefits of a private side of our lives.
Privacy enables the rehearsal of thought before speech, reflection before action, and intimacy before exposure. It allows for experimentation, contradiction, and vulnerability — the very conditions of interior life. Without some degree of privacy, autonomy collapses and intimacy erodes into surveillance.
We need privacy to feel good about ourselves and the world.
Privacy is a human choice
Privacy is one of the most intimate and powerful choices we make. It is the decision to connect or protect, to perform or retreat. These choices shape our identity, our relationships, and our sense of agency. Privacy is not simply a fixed condition imposed from the outside but a continuous negotiation, both with ourselves and with society, about how much of ourselves we are willing to share, with whom, and under what terms.

Our expressions, interests, routines, desires, and anxieties are all tracked, recorded, and analyzed — often without our explicit awareness or consent. In order to rewrite the rules and goals of the digital marketing game, we must begin by properly designing and deploying these choices. Consent cannot be reduced to a checkbox. Transparency cannot be buried in opaque legal terms. The architecture of choice must be ethical, legible, and meaningful. People must understand what is being asked of them, what they are giving up, and what they are getting in return. And more importantly, they must feel that saying “no” will be just as respected as saying “yes.” When privacy is respected as a choice, trust becomes possible — and with it, long-term relationships and brand value.
To fail here is not only to betray users’ expectations, it is to undermine the future of marketing itself. Because marketing, at its best, is not about extraction. It is a conversation. And conversations rely on boundaries, mutual respect, and trust.
A timeline of broken trust
If privacy is such a fundamental and widely shared human value, then why are we facing such a deep and persistent crisis around it?
The answer lies in decades of digital development. During that time, the architecture of the internet, and the economic incentives surrounding it, evolved in ways that consistently prioritized extraction over consent, surveillance over transparency, and growth over ethics.
What we’re left with is more than a technical problem or a regulatory challenge. Users around the world express a widespread sense of grievance, collectively feeling that individuals have been manipulated and devalued in the digital environments they inhabit.
What people fear is not just data breaches or algorithmic bias, but a more pervasive erosion of dignity and control. They feel that systems are rigged against them. That no matter what they do — adjust settings, reject cookies, read the fine print — the result is being tracked, profiled, and monetized. This sense of helplessness fuels a broader decline in institutional trust, which now affects governments, platforms, media, and brands alike. And it’s not just emotional — it’s behavioral. When people don’t trust a system, they withdraw, they distort their behavior, and they retaliate. They become unreachable.
This crisis of trust didn’t emerge overnight. It is deeply rooted in the history of the internet itself — especially in the history of digital marketing. For much of the early 2000s, digital marketing operated on a simple premise: more data equals better targeting. The industry rushed to collect, aggregate, and monetize as much personal information as possible, often with little regard for consent, ethics, or long-term consequences. The rise of cookies, programmatic advertising, behavioral profiling, and data brokerage created an immensely powerful system — but also deeply opaque. As the saying goes, users became the product.

We might place the beginning of this particular timeline in 2004, with the rise of Facebook. Back then, the platform was still competing with other emerging social media companies like Friendster and MySpace, and much of what was to come was still unimagined.
Facebook would become the model and the main platform for most of the digital marketing practices that we know. It’s where data harvesting and microtargeting became real verbs, with real consequences.
2004 is a symbolic year for what would later be called Web 2.0, the space dominated by user-generated content, ease of use, participatory culture, and interoperability.
2008
The financial crisis of 2008 accelerated the move towards digital channels. While overall US advertising declined during 2008-2009, digital advertising experienced actual growth and increased adoption. Google dominated the search market and SEO was the name of the game.
Businesses began to favor digital marketing due to its measurability and hard data, offered by paid ads and search optimization. Tools like Google Analytics provided rich data on user behavior and on conversions, while social media platforms were becoming integral to marketing strategies, with ad spending increasing significantly.
2011
By 2011, we had begun to understand the power of social networks for community organizing and the global amplification of online movements. In a way, the so-called Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street movement created the template for what we now recognize as some of the main features of the consumer internet: crowd mobilization, user-generated news, real-time communication, and data mining.
Twitter hashtags, Facebook posts, and Tumblr memes like “We Are the 99 Percent” defined not only these specific movements but an entire mode of online discourse, where the decentralized use of digital tools, crowdsourcing, and content virality became widely recognized as native digital mechanics.
The implications for digital marketing were clear: both movements demonstrated how social media could transcend geographic boundaries, turning local events into global phenomena. They also highlighted the timeless value of authentic content in engaging audiences, as well as the power of concise messaging in rallying communities, a tactic now standard in digital marketing campaigns.
2016
By 2016, the digital marketing industry faced several significant challenges, while also intersecting with geopolitical issues in notable ways.
On the one hand, the explosive growth of mobile usage and the increasing complexity of marketing software required constant adaptation and innovation from an industry still dealing with the unforeseen effects of social networks. On the other hand, the twin political earthquakes of that year — Brexit and Donald Trump’s first election — were both deeply influenced by digital marketing’s increasingly detailed segmentation and targeting abilities, programmatic advertising, and omnichannel outreach.
2018
It’s not an overstatement to say that the GDPR changed everything.
For the first time, an enforceable regulation required marketers to obtain explicit, specific consent from users before collecting their data, and empowered consumers with the right to access, rectify, erase, and port their personal information. This data quality and minimization approach meant that the industry’s practices had to change radically, and sometimes dramatically — from email marketing to advertising, from content personalization to consent management.
As we now know, the effects of the regulation extended far beyond European borders. The GDPR contributed to the emergence of the current digital ecosystem where compliance intersects with innovation and creates a new, more sophisticated user experience.
And then the pandemic came.
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the already dizzying transformation of digital marketing in the early century. Global lockdowns and social distancing measures meant that internet usage skyrocketed during that year — with social media engagement intensifying and ecommerce becoming a lifeline for businesses that had until then only relied on physical stores and offline customer relationships.
Whether we’re talking about remote work or short videos, the pandemic introduced many new formats and behaviors that quickly became normalized and, in many cases, irreversible. Livestream shopping, virtual events, personalized newsletters, and the rise of creator-driven content all emerged or accelerated as brands scrambled to meet people where they were: online, fragmented, and searching for connection.
In the process, digital marketing itself transformed from a support function into a primary channel of relationship-building, pushing marketers to adopt new tools, rethink old metrics, and operate at the intersection of empathy, immediacy, and innovation.
2024
The arrival of ChatGPT and the wave of generative AI fundamentally altered the terrain. Suddenly, data wasn’t just being collected and analyzed — it was being used to create, to predict, and to simulate. The implications are vast, not just for tech, but for trust and ethics in the digital sphere.
Then came the regulatory and infrastructural inflection point. The introduction of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the EU and the rollout of Google’s Consent Mode V2 marked a fundamental change in how digital ecosystems are governed. These weren’t minor tweaks — they were seismic signals that the era of free-for-all data collection was over.
This shift wasn’t just driven by regulators — it was demanded by users and reflected in the new tools themselves. AI systems trained on vast pools of data raise urgent questions: Whose data? With what permission? The answers underline the role of trust as the only viable foundation for sustainable, ethical growth in digital marketing.
